MICROSOFT MONEY 98, MONEY 99, MONEY 99 HOME & BUSINESS EDITION
In October of 1996, I joined lead designer Melinda Nascimbeni at Microsoft to form the first Money Design team. After two years our team had grown to seven members. Together we worked with a large team of Program Managers, Marketers, Testers, Writers and Developers. The release of Money 98 was an incredible accomplishment as it was a total redesign from a traditional graphical user interface to a simpler, more task-focused UI complete with a custom interface built in C++. The product was redesigned to have a fresh look and feel and also appeal to an increasing number of internet users by using more text links instead of buttons, flat colors instead of textures, and simple custom controls instead of the standard, beveled Windows-style controls. The product's main navigation was removed from a hidden drop-down menu and positioned more prominently at the top of every screen. A secondary navigation bar was introduced and displayed at the left when screens required it. In addition to designing specific screens, dialogs, wizards, and refining other areas in the product; I was responsible for communicating with the Development team to facilitate implementation of the custom interface, color schemes, font schemes and control set. To support this process, I helped create the main form of successful communication between the design and development teams -- an internal web site maintained daily in order to keep everyone informed of the status of every screen, dialog, icon, color, font, specification, metric, and all the artwork in the product.
